Construction goes vertical for Cedars-Sinai Marina Del Rey replacement hospital

The nine-story building will front Lincoln Boulevard

A year-and-a-half after commencing work, construction has kicked into high gear for the replacement of the Cedars-Sinai Marina Del Rey Hospital, with the arrival of an orange tower crane.

The project, now rising from a 6.3 acre site at 4640-4660 Lincoln Boulevard, will consist of a new nine-story patient tower on the former site of a surface parking lot and a medical office building. The placement of the new construction allows the existing hospital, completed in the 1970s, to remain in operation until its replacement is completed.

HDR, Inc. is designing the contemporary glass-clad building, which will rise approximately 190 feet in height. A presentation given in May 2020 the City Planning Commission indicated that the new hospital is expected to initially provide a maximum of 96 patient beds, although it would eventually expand to a maximum capacity of 160 beds.

Offerings in the new hospital would include new operating rooms, cardiac catheterization and gastroenterology labs, interventional procedure suites, and an expanded emergency department.

The ongoing construction, carried out by contractor Rudolph and Sletten Inc., also required the opening of a new lobby and main entrance on the north side of the existing hospital. Following the completion of the new building, which is currently on pace to occur by 2028, the original 1970s hospital will be demolished.

Cedars-Sinai is seeking to modernize the Marina Del Rey Hospital due to a state law which requires the retrofit or replacement of acute care facilities prior to the year 2030. Cedars joins Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, and several other health systems which have also moved to upgrade or redevelop their own Los Angeles area facilities before the deadline.

To a similar end, Cedars-Sinai and Providence St. Joseph Health have recently partnered on a $624-million modernization of a hospital campus in Tarzana, and Cedars has since received approvals to expand and upgrade its main campus in Beverly Grove.
