Our strength as a region will lie in our ability to break down siloes and counter the atomization that naturally occurs given both our diversity and geographic spread.
— Steph Hsieh, Interim CEO, BioscienceLA

The LA Advantage

Los Angeles County is one of the nation’s largest counties with 4,084 square miles and the largest population of any county in the nation–nearly 10 million residents who account for approximately 27 percent of California’s population. 40% of all imports access the United States through the Greater Los Angeles area. The Greater Los Angeles region is the 15th largest economy in the world with $1.8T in output.

Opportunity & Potential

We are not just an international community, but a truly global ecosystem that spans medtech, digital health, consumer health, healthcare, and other industries. The Greater Los Angeles region receives ~$1.7B/year in NIH funding, which is the most in California. We produce the most life science-degreed graduates in the United States and 65% of the bioscience jobs in LA County do not require a 4-year degree. There is enormous opportunity and potential to reverse the atomization of the biosciences in LA.
